About us…

The White House is the home of Annie and Christopher Nicholl.

Over the years, originally in London, we have gained a wealth of experience in catering for our Guests.

Annie, as well as being a superb cook, is a successful Garden Designer – www.nichollgardendesign.co.uk.  Christopher is now a ‘distance learning’ tutor of business and social English to foreign students (TEFL) – www.learning englishonholiday.co.uk. – teaching his students both by Skype (on line) and on residential courses here at The White House.

We have lived in this area on the Wiltshire/Berkshire border since leaving London in 1984 with our two children – now grown up with homes of their own.

The very best B&B
In 2006, we bought and extensively renovated The White House in the hamlet of Little Bedwyn adding two additional, luxurious en-suite shower rooms so that we could provide the very best B&B accommodation in the superb setting of this picturesque area.

The history of Little Bedwyn
Little Bedwyn – then part of the ‘Bedwyn Estate’ – dates back to the year 778 AD – yes, 778!
“Little Bedwyn parish, contains Little Bedwyn village, Chisbury village, and several outlying farmsteads.  Most of it was apparently part of a large estate called Bedwyn held in the early Middle Ages by the kings of Wessex and of England: Chisbury was apparently separated from the estate in 778, Little Bedwyn separating from the Bedwyn Estate in the 12th century or early 13th.” www.british-history.ac.uk

The Kennet & Avon Canal
The White House, a former vicarage, fronts onto the towpath of the Kennet & Avon Canal at Lock 67. Built in 1797, the Canal joins the River Thames at Reading and thus links London with Bristol, meandering through some of the most beautiful countryside in Britain.  (see How to finds us ).

The railway
Beyond the canal, the railway (built in 1862) shadows the canal’s contour and now links London with Exeter and the West of England, also providing a local commuter service to Newbury, Reading and London – a journey of just 70 minutes by train and a little longer by car. (see How to finds us ).

Annie & Christopher look forward to welcoming you to your ‘home-from-home’.
